Convert BMP to SVG — Bitmap to Vector

BMP is an uncompressed legacy bitmap format, while SVG is a modern scalable vector format. Converting BMP to SVG modernizes legacy graphics by transforming them into resolution-independent vectors. Since BMP stores uncompressed pixel data with no artifacts, it provides clean input for the vector tracer.

Why Convert BMP to SVG?

Legacy BMP graphics can be modernized as scalable SVG vectors for web use, responsive design, and print production. BMP’s uncompressed pixel data means no compression artifacts to interfere with tracing, so simple graphics with clean edges produce very clean vectors.

How to Convert BMP to SVG

1

Upload your BMP file by dragging it into the converter or clicking to browse. Files up to 50 MB are supported.

2

KoalaPic reads the uncompressed bitmap data and traces it to vector paths using automated edge detection.

3

Download the SVG file. Both files are deleted after 1 hour.

💡

Quality Note

BMP’s uncompressed data provides artifact-free input for the tracer. Simple graphics with few colors and clean edges produce excellent vector traces. Complex photographic content produces stylized, artistic results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Often very well, better than a photograph would. BMP files frequently hold logos, diagrams, icons and screenshots with flat colour areas and hard edges, which is exactly what tracing handles cleanly. Photographic BMPs produce far messier results.

For flat graphics, dramatically — a traced logo can drop from megabytes to a few kilobytes. For photographic content the opposite happens, because tracing generates thousands of paths and each costs markup.

Yes. The output is standard SVG markup that Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and Affinity Designer all open, letting you recolour regions, delete detail or reshape individual paths. That is usually the point of vectorising an old bitmap.

Polygon mode traces straight-edged shapes, which suits diagrams, screenshots and geometric logos and produces smaller files. Spline mode fits smooth curves, which flatters hand-drawn and organic artwork at the cost of a heavier SVG.
