Convert PEF to WEBP — Smaller Web Files

A Pentax PEF file is 20–40 MB of RAW sensor data, which is not something you put on a web page. WEBP is the modern answer — smaller than JPG at matching quality and supported by every current browser.

Why Convert PEF to WEBP?

WEBP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at matching quality and is supported by every current browser. For a Pentax shooter publishing 24–36 MP frames, that is bandwidth saved on every view. Note that Pentax bodies can write either PEF or DNG straight out of the camera, so a shooter who picked PEF chose the proprietary option deliberately.

How to Convert PEF to WEBP

1

Upload your PEF file. Up to 50 files per batch, 50 MB each.

2

KoalaPic decodes the Pentax RAW and encodes WEBP at quality 85 by default.

3

Download the WEBP, or adjust quality first if you want a smaller file.

💡

Quality Note

WEBP at quality 85 is visually indistinguishable from the JPG equivalent while landing 25–35% smaller. For a 24–36 MP Pentax frame that is a meaningful saving on every page load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and every current mobile browser, covering above 95% of live traffic. Outside the browser it is thinner, so keep the PEF or a JPG if the Pentax file has to open in older desktop software.

For the web, yes: 25–35% smaller at matching quality, with cleaner edges. For sending a Pentax photo to someone who will open it in whatever they have, JPG is still the safer file.

No. A PEF is a single exposure, so there are no frames to animate. Animated WEBP only makes sense from a source that already holds several frames, such as a GIF or a video.

Lossy for anything published — a 24–36 MP Pentax frame at quality 85 is far smaller and looks the same. Lossless WEBP is worth it only when the image will be edited again afterwards.
