Convert SRW to PNG — Lossless Quality

SRW files from Samsung bodies carry 12–14-bit sensor data that most software cannot read. PNG is the lossless target: everything the demosaic produced survives, at the cost of a file several times larger than a JPG.

Why Convert SRW to PNG?

PNG is lossless, so nothing is discarded a second time after the RAW decode. That matters for APS-C files headed into further editing, where a JPG's compression artefacts would compound with every save. Note that Samsung left the camera business in 2015, so SRW is an orphaned format with no vendor software still being updated — which is exactly why converting matters more here.

How to Convert SRW to PNG

1

Upload your SRW file, or drop a batch of up to 50 at once.

2

The RAW data is demosaiced and written to PNG without a second lossy step.

3

Download the PNG. Expect it to be several times the SRW's size — that is lossless compression doing its job.

💡

Quality Note

The PNG is lossless relative to the decoded image, not to the SRW. The 12–14-bit sensor data is reduced to 8 bits per channel during the demosaic; PNG then preserves that result exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because RAW is compressed sensor data and PNG is a compressed full-colour image. Demosaicing a 20–28 MP Samsung frame produces three colour channels where the sensor recorded one, so the PNG routinely exceeds the SRW it came from.

PNG if the image is going back into an editor, JPG if it is going to a person. PNG discards nothing after the SRW decode, while a JPG of the same 20–28 MP Samsung frame is a tenth of the size and looks identical on screen.

No. The 12–14-bit range in the SRW is mapped to 8 bits per channel during the demosaic, and PNG preserves that result exactly. Keep the SRW if you need the highlight and shadow latitude.

Not from the conversion itself — a Samsung SRW is a photograph and has no alpha channel. Run the background removal tool on the PNG afterwards if you need transparency.
