They compress about equally well, so the deciding factor is where the photos will live. HEIC is native across Apple devices and Photos, so choose it for an Apple workflow. AVIF has far wider browser support, so choose it for anything published on the web.

Windows 11 displays HEIC in Photos and File Explorer, but Windows 10 needs the HEIF Image Extensions package from the Microsoft Store first. If the recipient’s setup is unknown, JPG remains the format that opens everywhere without preparation.

Roughly half the size at matching visual quality. A 24 MP Alpha frame that produces a 4 MB JPG typically lands near 2 MB as HEIC, which is why Apple adopted it as the iPhone default camera format.
