Frequently Asked Questions

AVIF typically produces files 20–30% smaller than WEBP at matching visual quality, and it handles the smooth gradients in skies and skin better — exactly where WEBP tends to band. For a portfolio of 24 MP Alpha frames that is a real bandwidth difference.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later, which covers the large majority of current traffic. Safari on iOS 16.3 and earlier cannot, so serve AVIF through a picture element with a WEBP or JPG fallback if that audience matters.

AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame compression, which searches far more encoding options than JPG does. That search is what buys the smaller file. Converting a 61 MP a7R V frame takes noticeably longer than the same image to JPG, and the result is typically half the size.
