Quality Note

NEF files contain 12-14 bits per channel. The AVIF output is 8-bit sRGB. At quality 80+, the result is excellent for screen-based use.

Frequently Asked Questions

For web delivery, clearly. AVIF is typically half the size of a JPG at matching visual quality and holds up far better in the smooth gradients of skies and skin, where JPG shows blocking. JPG remains the safer choice when a file must open anywhere without question.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later. That covers most current traffic, but Safari on iOS 16.3 and older cannot render it, so publish AVIF inside a picture element with a WEBP or JPG fallback if that audience matters to you.

AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame compression, which evaluates many more encoding decisions than JPG does, and that search is what produces the smaller file. A 45.7 MP Z8 frame takes noticeably longer to encode than the same image to JPG, and typically lands at half the size.

Yes by default. Camera body, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and GPS coordinates carry through from the NEF. Use the strip option to drop all metadata, or strip GPS alone if you want the shooting record without the location.
