CR3 files contain 14-bit sensor data. The AVIF output is 8-bit sRGB. At quality 80+, the result is visually excellent.

Frequently Asked Questions

AVIF is typically 20–30% smaller than WEBP at matching quality and handles smooth gradients in skies and skin better, where WEBP tends to band. WEBP has slightly wider browser reach, so AVIF wins on quality-per-byte and WEBP on compatibility.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later. Safari on iOS 16.3 and earlier cannot, so serve AVIF inside a picture element with a WEBP or JPG fallback if that audience matters.

AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame compression, which evaluates far more encoding options than JPG. That search is exactly what buys the smaller file. A 45 MP EOS R5 frame takes noticeably longer and typically ends up around half the size.

Yes by default — camera body, lens, exposure settings and GPS coordinates all carry through from the CR3. Strip everything with the EXIF option, or strip GPS alone if you want the technical data without the location.
