Frequently Asked Questions

Only if a specific program demands it. BMP stores pixels uncompressed, offering no quality advantage over TIFF or PNG while producing much larger files. Some legacy Windows software and embedded display systems accept nothing else.

The BMP container is lossless, so nothing is lost after decoding. The RAW-to-8-bit step happens first and resolves the CR3’s 14-bit exposure latitude into fixed pixel values — that is where the flexibility goes, not in BMP itself.

About 74 MB for a 24 MP EOS R6 Mark II frame and roughly 137 MB for a 45 MP R5 frame. BMP applies no compression at all, so the size is width × height × 3 bytes plus a header.

No. BMP has no standard EXIF container, so camera body, lens, exposure settings and GPS coordinates are discarded entirely. Use TIFF or JPG when the technical record must travel with the image.
