Within Apple’s ecosystem, yes — HEIC is roughly half the size of a JPG at matching quality and is native to iOS and macOS Photos. Outside it, support is patchier, and JPG remains the format that opens anywhere without preparation.

Windows 11 displays HEIC in Photos and File Explorer. Windows 10 requires the HEIF Image Extensions package from the Microsoft Store first. If you do not know the recipient’s setup, send JPG.

They compress about equally well, so choose by destination rather than quality. HEIC for an Apple workflow where it is native; AVIF for the web, where browser support is far broader.

Yes. HEIC carries EXIF, so camera body, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and GPS coordinates survive from the CR3 by default. Strip all metadata with the EXIF option, or remove GPS alone to keep the technical record without the capture location.
