Frequently Asked Questions

Increasingly, but not universally. Windows 11 shows HEIC in Photos and File Explorer, Windows 10 needs the HEIF Image Extensions package first, and Android has supported it since version 10. If you do not know the recipient’s setup, JPG still opens everywhere.

HEIC gives roughly half the file size at the same visual quality, which matters when sending 45 MP frames. JPG gives certainty that the file opens on any device made in the last thirty years. Choose HEIC within an Apple ecosystem and JPG for anything else.

Yes. HEIC carries EXIF, so camera body, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and GPS coordinates survive the conversion from NEF by default. Use the strip option to remove all metadata, or strip GPS alone to keep the technical data without the location.

They compress comparably, so the decision is about destination rather than quality. HEIC is native to Apple Photos and iOS sharing. AVIF has far broader browser support, making it the better format for anything published on the web.
