How do I open a NEF file?
Nikon's free NX Studio reads NEF, and so do Lightroom, Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee. Windows needs the Raw Image Extension for Explorer previews; macOS handles NEF in Preview without help.
What does the NEF file keep that a JPG does not?
Nikon stores white balance, Picture Control and Active D-Lighting as instructions alongside the sensor data rather than applying them permanently. Change your mind about any of them later and the NEF obliges; the JPG has already committed.
Which Nikon cameras produce NEF files?
Effectively all of them: the D-series DSLRs from the D1 onwards, the Z-series mirrorless bodies, and the Coolpix models that offer raw. Nikon has kept the NEF extension across every generation, though newer bodies write a different internal encoding.
Should I convert NEF to TIFF or to JPG?
TIFF when the file is heading into further editing or print, because it is lossless and keeps the colour profile. JPG when it is going to be shared, uploaded or emailed, because it is a fraction of the size and opens everywhere.
