Quality Note

CR2 files contain 12-14 bits per channel. The conversion renders to 8-bit sRGB AVIF. At quality 80+, the output is excellent for web display.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the web, decisively. AVIF is typically half the size of a JPG at matching visual quality and holds smooth gradients in skies and skin without the blocking JPG shows. JPG still wins where a file must open on anything, anywhere.

It preserves the decoded image well, but not the RAW’s latitude. KoalaPic renders the CR2 to 8-bit before encoding, so AVIF stores that result faithfully at a small file size — the 14-bit editing headroom is resolved before AVIF is involved.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later, covering most current traffic. Safari on iOS 16.3 and earlier cannot display it, so serve AVIF inside a picture element with a WEBP or JPG fallback if that audience matters.

AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame compression, which searches many more encoding options than JPG does, and that search is what buys the smaller file. A 30 MP 5D Mark IV frame takes noticeably longer and typically ends up about half the size.
