Quality Note

DNG files can contain up to 16-bit per channel data. The AVIF output is 8-bit sRGB. At quality 80+, the visual quality is excellent.

Frequently Asked Questions

For quality per byte, yes. AVIF is typically half the size of JPG and 20–30% smaller than WEBP at matching quality, and it handles the smooth gradients common in phone photography without banding. The trade is narrower browser support than WEBP.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later, covering most current traffic. Safari on iOS 16.3 and earlier cannot display it, so use a picture element with a WEBP or JPG fallback where that matters.

AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame compression, which explores far more encoding options than JPG does — and that search is what produces the smaller file. Larger DNG sources such as 60 MP Hasselblad frames take noticeably longer.

Yes by default. Device model, lens, exposure settings and GPS coordinates carry through. Strip everything with the EXIF option, or strip GPS alone if the technical data should stay but the location should not.
