Frequently Asked Questions

Only where software demands it. BMP stores pixels with no compression, so it gives nothing over TIFF or PNG in quality while producing far larger files. Legacy Windows tools and some embedded systems are the realistic reasons to choose it.

About 36 MB for a 12 MP phone DNG and over 180 MB for a 60 MP medium-format file. BMP applies no compression whatsoever, so the size is simply width × height × 3 bytes plus a small header.

The BMP container is lossless, so nothing is lost once decoding is complete. The RAW-to-8-bit step happens first and fixes the DNG’s wider tonal range into final pixel values — that is where the editing latitude goes.

No. BMP has no standard EXIF container, so device model, lens, exposure settings and GPS coordinates are all dropped. Choose TIFF or JPG if that information needs to travel with the image.
