Convert AVIF to GIF — Next-Gen to Legacy Format

AVIF is a cutting-edge format, but many legacy systems don’t support it. Converting to GIF gives you maximum backward compatibility with virtually any platform or device ever made. The trade-off is GIF’s 256-color limit, which makes it unsuitable for photographic content. For better quality legacy conversion, consider AVIF-to-JPG or AVIF-to-PNG instead.

Why Convert AVIF to GIF?

GIF is supported by every platform, email client, and browser going back decades. When you need to share an AVIF image with someone using very old software or a platform that only accepts classic formats, GIF ensures compatibility. For simple graphics like logos and icons, GIF produces compact files with good quality.

How to Convert AVIF to GIF

1

Upload your AVIF file by dragging it into the converter or clicking to browse. Files up to 50 MB are supported.

2

KoalaPic decodes the AVIF and quantizes to a 256-color GIF with Floyd-Steinberg dithering.

3

Download the GIF file. Both files are deleted after 1 hour.

💡

Quality Note

Significant quality reduction due to the 256-color limit. AVIF’s advanced compression and wide color gamut are lost in the conversion. For better quality legacy formats, use JPG (photographs) or PNG (graphics with transparency).

Frequently Asked Questions

For a still image, JPG is almost always the better choice — it keeps millions of colours where GIF permits 256, and produces a smaller file. GIF makes sense only when something downstream requires it, or for a simple animation.

Partly. GIF supports only single-colour transparency, not the smooth alpha channel AVIF holds, so soft edges become hard and semi-transparent pixels are forced fully opaque or fully clear. Choose PNG or WEBP to keep smooth transparency.

No. This conversion produces a single static frame from the first image. Animated AVIF to animated GIF is not supported here.

GIF permits 256 colours per frame while AVIF holds millions, so gradients collapse into visible steps. Dithering scatters the quantisation error as fine grain to soften the banding, which trades one artefact for another.
