Convert PNG to GIF — Simple Graphics Format

PNG and GIF are both popular for web graphics, but they serve different niches. GIF is limited to 256 colors but is universally supported, including by very old systems. If your PNG already uses fewer than 256 colors (logos, icons, pixel art), the conversion is essentially lossless. For complex PNGs, color quantization and dithering are applied.

Why Convert PNG to GIF?

GIF is required by some legacy platforms and has universal support going back to the 1990s. If your PNG is a simple graphic with flat colors, GIF can be a compact alternative. GIF also supports simple animation, making it useful for combining static PNGs into animated sequences on legacy platforms that don’t support WEBP animations.

How to Convert PNG to GIF

1

Upload your PNG file by dragging it into the converter or clicking to browse. Files up to 50 MB are supported.

2

KoalaPic quantizes to a 256-color palette with optional dithering, converting transparency to binary (on/off).

3

Download the GIF file. Both files are deleted after 1 hour.

Quality Note

If your PNG has fewer than 256 colors, the conversion is nearly lossless. Photographic PNGs with millions of colors will lose detail during quantization. Note that PNG’s alpha transparency becomes binary in GIF — pixels are either fully transparent or fully opaque.

Frequently Asked Questions

GIF supports binary transparency only (fully transparent or fully opaque). PNG’s semi-transparent pixels (alpha channel) are converted to either fully transparent or fully opaque, which can create rough edges around anti-aliased graphics.

For simple graphics with few colors, yes. GIF’s LZW compression is efficient for flat-color images. For photographs or complex graphics, GIF can actually be larger than the PNG because of the palette overhead.

This converter creates static GIF from a single PNG. For animated GIF creation from multiple frames, you’ll need a specialized animation tool.

It is reduced to a single fully transparent colour. PNG stores 256 levels of alpha, GIF stores one on-or-off value, so soft anti-aliased edges become hard and semi-transparent pixels are forced either solid or invisible.
