Convert WEBP to GIF — For Legacy Compatibility

WEBP is a modern format but isn’t accepted by all platforms. Some older systems, email clients, and CMS platforms only support classic formats like GIF. Converting WEBP to GIF gives you maximum backward compatibility at the cost of reduced color depth. For better quality, consider converting to JPG or PNG instead.

Why Convert WEBP to GIF?

Legacy systems that predate WEBP may require GIF format. While JPG or PNG are usually better choices for WEBP conversion, GIF is appropriate when the target platform specifically requires it, or when dealing with simple graphics that use fewer than 256 colors.

How to Convert WEBP to GIF

1

Upload your WEBP file by dragging it into the converter or clicking to browse. Files up to 50 MB are supported.

2

KoalaPic decodes the WEBP and quantizes to a 256-color palette with Floyd-Steinberg dithering.

3

Download the GIF file. Both files are deleted after 1 hour.

💡

Quality Note

Color depth drops from millions to 256. For photographic content, this means visible banding and dithering patterns. For simple graphics, the quality difference may be minimal. JPG or PNG are usually better alternatives unless GIF is specifically required.

Frequently Asked Questions

JPG is usually the better choice for photographs since it supports millions of colors. GIF only makes sense when the target platform specifically requires it, or for simple flat-color graphics.

Only the first frame of animated WEBP files is converted to a static GIF. The animation is not preserved in this conversion.

GIF only supports binary transparency (on/off), not WEBP’s alpha channel. Semi-transparent areas will become either fully transparent or fully opaque.

They are reduced to at most 256. A photographic WEBP holds millions of tones, so gradients band visibly and dithering adds grain to disguise it. Flat graphics and logos survive the reduction far better than photographs.
