Lossless format — files can be large
GIF is limited to 256 colors
Best for logos, icons, and line art. Photos produce stylized results.
BMP files are uncompressed and can be very large. Consider TIFF (LZW) or PNG for lossless with smaller file sizes.

Why Convert ORF to GIF?
GIF's 256-colour ceiling is severe for photographs, but the files are small and every system on earth displays them. It suits a contact sheet or a quick look, not a delivery. Note that Olympus sold its camera division in 2021 and the bodies now ship as OM System, but the file format and the .orf extension carried straight over.
How to Convert ORF to GIF

Quality Note
Reducing a 20 MP photograph to 256 colours is a large loss. Dithering hides some of it as fine grain, but skies and skin tones band visibly. Use GIF for previews only.
