ORF Converter

ORF is Olympus's raw format, written by the OM-D and PEN bodies and by OM System's current range — the name changed when Olympus sold the camera division in 2021, but the format did not. Micro Four Thirds sensors keep the files smaller than full-frame raw, and just as unreadable outside a raw editor.

ORF questions

How do I open an ORF file?

OM System Workspace, formerly Olympus Workspace, is the free option. Lightroom, Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee all read ORF as well. Nothing outside a raw editor will display it, so converting is the answer for sharing.

Are ORF files smaller than full-frame raw files?

Usually, because Micro Four Thirds sensors have fewer pixels over a smaller area. An ORF from a 20-megapixel OM-D body typically lands around 17 to 22 MB against 40 MB or more for a high-resolution full-frame raw.

Did ORF change when Olympus became OM System?

No. Olympus sold the camera division in 2021 and the brand on the body changed, but the format did not: an OM-1 writes ORF exactly as an OM-D E-M1 did, and the same software reads both.

Do ORF files keep the in-camera art filters?

The filter is recorded as a setting rather than applied to the sensor data, so a raw editor shows the unfiltered frame by default. Only the camera JPG has the effect baked in — which is the point of shooting raw if you might want it removed.
