Convert RAF to AVIF — Best Compression

RAF is Fujifilm's RAW format and holds far more data than any web page needs. AVIF compresses the result harder than WEBP or JPG, which matters when a 26–40 MP frame has to load quickly.

Why Convert RAF to AVIF?

AVIF is usually 20–30% smaller than WEBP again, which compounds across a gallery. The trade is encoding time and thinner support outside browsers. Note that most Fujifilm X bodies use an X-Trans colour filter array rather than the Bayer pattern everyone else uses, so RAF files need a different demosaic to resolve correctly.

How to Convert RAF to AVIF

1

Upload your RAF file by dragging it in or clicking to browse.

2

The RAW is decoded and re-encoded with AV1. This takes longer than JPG because the encoder evaluates far more options.

3

Download the AVIF — typically the smallest file any of these targets will produce.

💡

Quality Note

AVIF at quality 85 typically beats WEBP by a further 20–30%. Encoding is slower because AV1 evaluates far more options — that search is what produces the smaller file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Substantially, for the web: typically half the size at matching quality, and better at the smooth gradients a 26–40 MP Fujifilm frame produces in skies. The cost is slower encoding and thinner support outside browsers.

No lossy format does. The 14-bit RAF is decoded to 8 bits per channel and then compressed, so AVIF preserves appearance rather than latitude. Keep the RAF if you may re-edit.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later. Most non-browser tools cannot open AVIF at all, so treat it as a publishing format and keep the RAF as the copy you actually work from.

AVIF uses AV1 compression, which evaluates far more encoding options than JPG does. On a 26–40 MP Fujifilm frame the search is noticeable, and it is exactly what produces the smaller file.
