Convert ICO to GIF — Simple and Portable

An ICO holds a square mark at several sizes. GIF is the older, simpler target: 256 colours, single-colour transparency, and support in effectively every system ever built, including the ones too old for PNG.

Why Convert ICO to GIF?

GIF's transparency is a single colour rather than an alpha channel, so anti-aliased icon edges turn hard. Choose it only when something downstream genuinely cannot take PNG.

How to Convert ICO to GIF

1

Upload your .ico file by dragging it in or clicking to browse.

2

The largest entry is extracted and quantised to a 256-colour palette with single-colour transparency.

3

Download the GIF. Check the edges — anti-aliasing does not survive this conversion cleanly.

💡

Quality Note

The palette drops to 256 colours and transparency becomes all-or-nothing per pixel. A flat two-colour mark survives this untouched; anything with a soft edge or a gradient will show it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only crudely. GIF stores a single transparent colour rather than an alpha channel, so soft anti-aliased icon edges become hard and any semi-transparent pixel is forced fully opaque or fully clear.

For a flat two- or three-colour mark, no — that is well inside GIF's 256-colour palette. For an icon with gradients or photographic detail, expect visible banding where the tones were reduced.

No. An ICO holds several sizes of one static image, not a sequence of frames, so there is nothing to animate. The output is a single static GIF at the largest entry's dimensions.

PNG, unless something specifically requires GIF. PNG is lossless, has no colour limit, keeps proper transparency and usually produces a smaller file on exactly this kind of artwork.
