Convert RW2 to BMP — Uncompressed

RW2 is Panasonic's RAW format. BMP is what you convert to when something downstream demands uncompressed pixels: some older Windows software, imaging SDKs and embedded systems accept it and nothing else.

Why Convert RW2 to BMP?

BMP applies no compression at all, so it is far larger than PNG with no quality advantage — both are lossless. It exists in this list because some toolchains still require it. Note that Panasonic uses RW2 across two very different sensor sizes, so file dimensions vary far more between Lumix bodies than they do within most makers' ranges.

How to Convert RW2 to BMP

1

Upload your RW2 file. Up to 50 MB per file.

2

The RAW is decoded and written as a 24-bit uncompressed bitmap.

3

Download the BMP. Be ready for a large file — there is no compression at all.

💡

Quality Note

BMP and PNG both store the decoded image losslessly, so the pixels are identical — BMP simply stores them uncompressed. A 20–25 MP frame lands around 70–110 MB.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only when something downstream demands it. BMP is uncompressed, so it is far larger than PNG with no quality gain — both are lossless. A Panasonic RW2 headed anywhere ordinary should become JPG, PNG or TIFF instead.

Around 70–110 MB for a 20–25 MP frame, against the 20–30 MB of the RW2. There is no compression whatsoever, so the size follows directly from the pixel count.

No, not relative to the decoded image. The demosaic maps the RW2's 12–14-bit sensor data down to 8 bits per channel, and BMP then stores that result exactly, with no compression applied.

No. BMP has no standard metadata container, so the camera model, lens, exposure settings and GPS recorded in the RW2 are all discarded. Convert to TIFF or JPG instead if that information has to survive.
