Convert PNG to BMP — For Legacy Compatibility

PNG and BMP are both lossless, but BMP is much older and lacks compression. Converting PNG to BMP is typically needed when legacy software or embedded systems require BMP input. Note that BMP does not support transparency — any alpha channel from the PNG is flattened to a white background.

Why Convert PNG to BMP?

Some legacy Windows applications, embedded systems, and industrial image processors only accept BMP format. Since both formats are lossless, the pixel data is preserved perfectly. The main difference is that transparency is lost and file size increases significantly because BMP has no compression.

How to Convert PNG to BMP

1

Upload your PNG file by dragging it into the converter or clicking to browse. Files up to 50 MB are supported.

2

KoalaPic converts to uncompressed 24-bit BMP, flattening any transparency to a white background.

3

Download the BMP file. Both files are automatically deleted after 1 hour.

💡

Quality Note

Lossless conversion for pixel data, but PNG transparency is lost — transparent areas become white. BMP files are much larger than PNG because BMP has no compression. Consider whether TIFF (lossless with compression) might better serve your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Standard BMP does not support transparency. Transparent and semi-transparent areas are flattened to a white background. If you need transparency, keep the PNG format.

Yes, significantly. PNG uses DEFLATE compression while BMP is uncompressed. A 500 KB PNG might become a 10 MB BMP with the exact same pixel data.

For most uses, yes. TIFF supports transparency, offers LZW compression, and is widely supported by professional software. BMP is only for very specific legacy requirements.

Width × height × 3 bytes plus a small header, regardless of content — a 1920 × 1080 image is always 6.2 MB. A PNG of the same picture is typically 3 to 10 times smaller because it compresses losslessly.
